Pr Pierre Roussel Louis XV Marquetry Encoignures - Pierre Roussel (French, 1723-1782). Pair of Louis XV marquetry encoignures or corner cabinets. Each with bowed and molded breccia marble tops above an inlaid door with a musical trophy. The angles mounted with pierced scrolls, on short scrolled feet. One cabinet marked ”P Roussel Jme” and ”J Griffin”, the other stamped ”P Roussell Jme.” Provenance: Christie's, London, ”Magnificent French Furniture and Sculpture, ” June 17, 1987, Lot 53; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. (Each) height: 37 1/2 in x width: 20 in x depth: 20 in. Condition: The cabinets are structurally sound. There are several large vertical splits forming along each side. There are areas of flaking, peeling, separation, and some large losses to the inlay especially along the doors. Along one of the cabinets there are additional large losses to the inlay along the upper left side; along the other cabinet there are large losses to the inlay along the lower edge and interior of the door. The doors open and close well; the doors are without keys and cannot be locked. There are no large cracks to the marble tops; however, there are several large chips along the rear wall facing edges. Tarnishing to the metal components. Some wear to the feet.
