Pr Venetian Painted Giltwood Blackamoor Torcheres - Pair of Venetian polychrome and parcel-gilt carved wood blackamoor torcheres, 19th century. The figures don decorated body armor with plumed detailing, each supporting a swagged, gadrooned cup above their head. Atop shaped rectangular bases terminating in paw feet. Provenance: Christie's, New York, NY, ”The C. Ruxton and Audrey B. Love Collection: Important European Furniture, Antiquities and Asian Works of Art, ” October 20, 2004, Lot 578; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. (Overall, each) height: 72 1/2 in x width: 20 in x depth: 20 in. Condition: To one of the figures, there are breaks to one foot, the rim of the pedestal, and the feathered cap, all with signs of regluing or restoration. The quiver along the figure's back is slightly loose. To the other figure, there is a dent along the rim of the metal basin atop the figure's head. To each of the figures, there are scattered cracks and splits forming in the wood, including a large vertical split along verso of one figure. To both of the figures, there are two repaired breaks along the figures skirt; there are additional scattered signs of restoration and repair throughout, including visible glue adhesive and repainting. There are scattered small to moderate chips and losses to the wood throughout, primarily along high points and the extreme edges. There are scattered losses to the gilt and pigment, particularly along the figures' clothing. The bases are structurally sound, however, they wobble. There are small to large losses along the feet, including a complete loss to one of the toes. To the bases, there is separation to the joints. There are cracks and splits forming to the wood throughout, primarily along the feet. Some small to moderate chips, primarily along the highpoints. Accretions and light scratches along the surfaces of the bases. Dust gathered along recessed areas.
