19th c. Miniature Portrait of a Soldier - Miniature portrait painting of a soldier in uniform, 19th century. Depicting a young man wearing a navy blue uniform with a crimson epaulette and buttons. Signed ”K” along the lower right; possibly by or of John Kay (Scottish, 1742-1826). Sotheby's tag affixed along the verso ”Sale 99 at Sotheby's, London, July 22, 1951.” With a Desmond Coke's Collection label along the verso. Also with a Leo and Doris Hodroff Collection label along the verso. Provenance: Estate of Desmond Coke; Sotheby's London, 1951; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. Sight; height: 2 3/4 in x width: 2 in. Framed; height: 6 in x width: 5 in x depth: 1/2 in. Condition: No signs of restoration when viewed under UV light. Some light undulation visible. Verso not inspected; not inspected out of frame. Framed under glass. Some wear to the frame, especially the back; backing is missing, new nails hold the portrait within the frame.
