2 Wedgwood Basalt Pottery Neoclassical Plaques - Wedgwood Pottery, England. Group of two ceramic wall plaques depicting neoclassical scenes in white sprigged bas-relief on black ”Basalt” Jasperware ground, ca. 1800. Including: One plaque depicting Apollo, the Greek god of sun and light, with five of the nine classical muses: Urania, the muse of astrology; Thalia, the muse of comedy and poetry; Erato, a muse of love and erotic poetry; Calliope, the muse of eloquence and epic poetry; and Melpomene, the muse of tragedy. One plaque depicting a cherubic Cupid figure with four classical women, including one offering an urn or water jug, a woman with bird and wreath, a winged female beneath a tree, and a woman standing before a column aflame. Provenance: Purchased in New York, ca. 1966; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. (Each) Sight; Height: 3 1/2 in x width: 8 1/2 in. Framed; Height: 6 in x width: 11 1/4 in x depth: 1 1/4 in. Condition: There are no visible breaks, losses, or signs of repair. To the third figure from the left along one plaque, there is a minute area of crazing or a possible crack along the feet, noticeable upon close inspection. Light wear along the extreme edges of the plaques. Some wear to the frames. Not inspected out of frames.
