Pr 19th. French Tole Chinoiserie Sinumbra Lamps - Pair of French Empire period sinumbra lamps, 19th century. Each featuring a hand-painted tinned and black lacquered toleware column depicting Chinoiserie scenes executed in gilt. Surmounted by a wide and flaring bulbous glass shade decorated with etched floral motifs. Provenance: The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. (Each) Height: 26 1/4 in x diameter: 10 1/4 in. Condition: Wear throughout commensurate with age and material. To one of the lamps, there are two large losses to the pigment and several smaller areas of flaking and large networks of oxidation along the underside of the circular shade fitter surmounting the lamp; there are signs of wear and losses to the pigment along the inner-circumference of the same component, where the globe rests. To the other lamp, there are similar signs of wear, oxidation, small losses, and areas of flaking to the pigment. There are losses and signs of repair or replacement to both the the knobs along the circular shade fitter of each lamp. There are large areas of over-painting throughout the base and central stem of each lamp that fluoresce under UV light. There are some small chips along the extreme edges of the octagonal bases. Tarnishing throughout the metal components. There is chipping throughout the lower rims of each glass globe, where they each rest atop the lamps. One shade with three small vertical cracks radiating from the chipping; the second shade with a small crack radiating from the chipping. The lamps have been electrified. The wiring to each lamp has been clipped.
