19th c. Italian Gilt Bronze & Pietra Dura Tazza - Italian Renaissance revival style pietra dura mosaic, glass, and ormolu gilt bronze mounted tazza, ca. 1874. The central pietra dura well depicting a dove surrounded by flowers executed in vibrant hardstones inlaid within a black stone slab. Surrounded by a pierced silver filigree and glass border, set within a gilt bronze frame. With applied putti mounts flanking either side. Resting atop four pierced and scrolling foliate feet. Incised ”Alph. Giroux” and ”A Paris” along the rim of the gilt bronze frame, indicating the object was likely retailed by Maison Alphonse Giroux et Cie, Paris. Provenance: Christie's, New York, NY, June 19, 1984, Lot 276; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. Height: 6 in x width: 17 1/4 in x diameter: 15 in. Condition: There are no large cracks to the glass. A few light frits and at least one small chip visible along the extreme edge. Some slight tarnishing to the gilt metal; a few small spots of verdigris patination. No large cracks or losses to the pietra dura visible. Some wear to the surface including areas of white discoloration throughout the stone. All components are secure, however, the putti are slightly loose. It appears that the glass has been reinforced along the lower edge with a sticky tack or tape, visible at the edges.
