Every year, on February 27th – International Polar Bear Day – a new coin is issued featuring a different motif. The 2019 coin is the third in the series, and its theme is: ”Flora und Fauna der Arktis” – Flora and Fauna of the Arctic. Despite the harsh conditions of the Arctic – low temperatures, permafrost, prolonged periods of darkness, and difficult reproductive conditions – a wide variety of plant and animal species thrive there. The white bear (polar bear) is considered the symbol of this region and is the largest land-dwelling predator in the world.
