Judaica / Zionism - Egypt, ”Year of Redemption” Medal, 1920 (5680) - A rare medal issued in Egypt in 1920, following the British conquest of the Land of Israel, commemorating either the ratification of the British Mandate for Palestine or the appointment of Sir Herbert Samuel as the first High Commissioner. The inscription “Year of Redemption” embodies the Zionist and national revival spirit of the era, when British rule was perceived as a gateway to the realization of the Zionist dream and the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Eretz Israel. Obverse: Hebrew inscription: ”Zechut Yerushalayim, Yagen Aleichem, Shanat HaGeulah 5680”, with a Star of David above and a laurel wreath around the border. Reverse: Star of David at center with the divine name “Shaddai” in Hebrew, surrounded by floral and symbolic Jewish decorations.
