Judaica / Zionism - Libya, “Ben Yehuda” Medal of the Zionist Organization in Tripoli, 1930s - Rare silver medal from the Zionist Organization “Ben Yehuda” in Tripoli, Libya, dating to the 1930s. The organization was named after Eliezer Ben-Yehuda, the reviver of the Hebrew language, and worked to promote Hebrew education and Zionist culture among Libyan Jewry. Obverse: An open book inscribed with the letters Aleph–Yod (א–י) symbolizing the Ten Commandments and Hebrew learning, surrounded by the inscription: ”Revival of the Language – Revival of the Nation.” Reverse: Star of David with the word “Zion” in the center, and around it the Hebrew text: ”The Zionist Organization in Tripolitania, Department of Education ‘Ben Yehuda’.” The “Ben Yehuda” organization was founded in 1931 and became a major educational and cultural movement. It ran Hebrew schools, ceremonies, theater productions, and a Hebrew library. By 1932, it was officially entrusted with the Jewish community’s Department of Education by the Italian authorities.
