Palestine - Engraved Token ”EGYPT SINAI PALESTINE 1918” on Ottoman Coin - An original Ottoman silver coin, hand-engraved by a British soldier in 1918 as a personal souvenir marking his service in the Sinai and Palestine Campaign of World War I. At the center appears a decorative monogram “J C”, likely representing the initials of the soldier or officer who owned or engraved the token. Around the rim is inscribed: ”R.G.H.Y. EGYPT SINAI PALESTINE 1918” The engraving was made by a member of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force, the British-led army that fought against the Ottoman Empire across Egypt, Sinai, and Palestine. Such altered Ottoman coins were commonly fashioned by soldiers as keepsakes or commemorative gifts of their wartime service.
