Judaica / Zionism - USA, Two Charity Tokens - Jewish Philanthropic Society of New York, 1922 and 1926 - A pair of rare charity tokens issued by the Jewish Philanthropic Society of New York, representing the Federation’s charitable activities during the 1920s. Both share a nearly identical obverse featuring a seven-branched menorah, the motto ”91 IN ONE”, and the Hebrew word צדקה (Charity). The 1922 token was struck over a U.S. silver dollar, uniquely featuring a Hebrew calendar and inscriptions outlining the organization’s multiple fields of aid—education, health, and social welfare. The 1926 token has a similar obverse but a distinct reverse reading ”CHARITY – MY SHARE FOR 1926”, flanked by banners dated 1916–1926, marking ten years of philanthropic service. Both tokens bear the Federation’s inspiring motto: ”CHARITY IS NOT THE BURDEN OF THE FEW, BUT THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE MANY.” These pieces embody the collective compassion and communal responsibility of American Jewry during the early 20th century.
