Judaica / Zionism - USA, Pair of Charity Tokens - Brooklyn Hebrew Home & Hospital for the Aged, New York, Early 20th Century - A pair of charity tokens issued by the Brooklyn Hebrew Home & Hospital for the Aged, a major Jewish welfare institution in Brooklyn, New York, dedicated to providing housing and care for elderly members of the Jewish community. Each token represented a symbolic donation of 50 cents, the cost of one meal for an aged couple. Obverse: Depicts the façade of the institution building with inscriptions in Hebrew and English: ”בית עברי לחולים וזקנים” / ”Brooklyn Hebrew Home & Hospital for the Aged”, and below: ”Howard & Dumont Avenues, Brooklyn, N.Y.” Reverse: ”FIFTY CENTS WILL BUY ONE MEAL FOR AN AGED COUPLE”, a moving testament to the spirit of compassion and community support in early Jewish New York. Two nearly identical variants exist, differing only in metal tone - one bright silver and the other darker in hue.
