Judaica / Zionism - USA, Pair of “Jewish Day” Medals - “A Century of Progress” Exposition, Chicago - 1933 - A historically significant pair of Jewish Day medals issued for the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair, known as “A Century of Progress.” The Jewish Day, held on July 3, 1933, drew an audience of over 125,000 people and was described as “the greatest Jewish spectacle ever presented in Chicago.” The event was organized under the auspices of the Jewish Agency for Palestine, with Dr. Chaim Weizmann, President of the World Zionist Organization, invited as the principal speaker. The main presentation, titled “The Romance of a People, ” was a grand theatrical and musical production celebrating Jewish contributions to the city of Chicago since its founding in 1833. Jewish Day was one of approximately 24 ethnic or cultural days at the fair, commemorating the diverse communities that shaped the city. Obverse: Star of David inscribed with the Hebrew date תרצ”ג (5693), surrounded by inscriptions: “Jewish Day, ” “Chicago, ” “A Century of Progress.” Reverse: Depicts Moses descending Mount Sinai with the Tablets of the Law, inscribed in Hebrew “וירד משה אל העם” and in English “The Romance of a People.” Struck in brass and copper, these medals beautifully capture the pride, heritage, and Zionist spirit of the Jewish-American community of the 1930s.
