Israel - 25 Mils 1948 - NGC MS 65 - Very Rare - If one coin could be called the coin of Israel, it would undoubtedly be the 25 Mils. Despite its lowest face value among all Israeli coins, it is regarded by collectors and historians alike as the greatest of them all. It was the first coin struck after two thousand years of exile, symbolizing the rebirth of the Jewish nation in its homeland. Minted before the Declaration of Independence, under secrecy and protection by the Irgun (Etzel), and in very limited quantities, it stands as one of Israel’s most iconic and emotionally powerful numismatic pieces. To date, only 145 coins have been graded by PCGS and NGC, and this example holds the highest grade among them – a true one-of-a-kind. A rare opportunity to acquire the crown jewel of Israeli coinage – an event that may not repeat itself for many years to come. After the establishment of the state in 1948, and until 1952, the mill (and the pound of Eretz Israel) served as legal tender. The only coin minted in the State of Israel was 25 mils. Front: ”25 mil” with 2 stylish olive branches. Back: Painted and inscribed: ”Israel” and painted a grape cluster. Of this coin, 42,650 units were minted in Jerusalem under the security of the Irgun Haetzel against British rule. On September 6, 1950, the currency ceased to be used as legal tender. In 1952, with the transition from the Israeli mil to the Israeli pound, the name of the mill was changed to a Pruta.
