Designed by the renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, this series is celebrated as one of the most beautiful in American coinage history. Above appears the legend “LIBERTY”, with 13 stars around the rim representing the original colonies. The date appears below, with the “S” mintmark beneath it, denoting the San Francisco Mint.
