Holocaust, Concentration Camp Banknotes - Germany - Buchenwald Camp - 0.5 Reichsmark (50 Pfennig) 1937-1945 - PMG 58 - Pick# SB1011b - German camp note from the World War II period, denominated 0.5 Reichsmark (50 Pfennig), issued for use within the Buchenwald concentration camp. Notes of this type were intended for internal camp circulation and were used by prisoners for limited purchases at the camp canteen. The note bears the German inscription “SS-Standort-Kantine - Buchenwald” - “SS Camp Canteen - Buchenwald”, as well as “Wertmarke” - “Value token”. Many concentration camp notes were destroyed toward the end of the war as Nazi Germany attempted to eliminate evidence connected to the camps and the crimes of the Holocaust. As a result, surviving original examples are considered scarce and historically significant. A powerful World War II and Holocaust-era historical artifact with strong appeal among collectors of camp notes, emergency currency, and Holocaust-related memorabilia.
