These notes served as local currency inside the ghetto and were intended to isolate and control the internal economy of the imprisoned Jewish population. The note bears the signature of Mordechai Chaim Rumkowski (M.C. Rumkowski), head of the Jewish Council in the Lodz Ghetto, as well as the German inscription “Der Aelteste der Juden in Litzmannstadt” - “Elder of the Jews in Litzmannstadt”. During the German occupation, Lodz was renamed “Litzmannstadt”.
