Palestine - Cafe Werner Token, Haifa - 30 Mil 1930's - Bronze - NGC XF Details - Rare - A rare bronze token issued for ”Cafe Werner” in Haifa during the British Mandate period, used as an internal payment token and as a substitute for small change. The tokens were issued for Zvi Werner, who immigrated from Vienna, Austria, and founded ”Cafe Werner” on Herzl Street in Haifa in 1935. During this period, shortages of low-denomination coinage led various businesses to issue private trade tokens for transactions, change, and internal accounting purposes. Cafe Werner tokens were originally imported as blank planchets and later stamped locally with denominations and inscriptions. Obverse: inscription ”CAFE WERNER HAIFA”. Reverse: denomination ”30” in a large stylized design.
