Palestine - Cafe Werner Token, Haifa - 40 Mil 1930's - Bronze - NGC XF Details - A particularly rare bronze token issued for ”Cafe Werner” in Haifa, used as an internal payment token and as a substitute for small change during the British Mandate period. The tokens were issued for Zvi Werner, who immigrated from Vienna, Austria, and founded ”Cafe Werner” on Herzl Street in Haifa in 1935. During this period, shortages of low-denomination coinage in Mandatory Palestine led various businesses to issue private tokens for transactions, change, and internal accounting purposes. Cafe Werner tokens were originally manufactured as blank planchets and later stamped locally with the business name and various denominations. Obverse: inscription ”CAFE WERNER HAIFA”. Reverse: denomination ”40” within an ornamental inner border.
