Austria / Salzburg - Tower Taler 1594/1976, Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau - Restrike - .925 Silver, Weight According to Specifications Approximately 34.73 g (Approximately 32.13 g of Pure Silver, Approximately 1.03 Ounces) - Proof - A 1976 restrike of the historic 1594 Tower Taler, issued during the rule of Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg from 1587 to 1612. This is not an original 16th-century coin. A small 925 fineness mark appears near the lower part of the obverse, identifying it as a modern restrike. This version is known as an SKWB Bank issue, struck in .925 silver in Proof quality. Comparable examples weigh approximately 34.73 grams. The obverse depicts Saints Rupert and Virgil flanking the coat of arms. Rupert holds a salt vessel, while Virgil holds a model of a cathedral. An ecclesiastical hat appears above the coat of arms. The surrounding inscription reads: WOLF TEODORIC ARCHIEP SALISB SED AP LEG (Wolf Dietrich, Archbishop of Salzburg and Legate of the Holy See) This side also bears the mark: 925 (.925 silver) The reverse depicts a tower standing amid turbulent waves, surrounded by personifications of the winds, with clouds and hail above. The surrounding inscription reads: IN DOMINO SPERANS NON INFIRMABOR 1594 (Trusting in the Lord, I shall not falter, 1594) The tower resisting the storm symbolizes steadfastness in the face of threats and upheaval. The design is known as the Turmtaler, or ”Tower Taler”.
