A gold 1 Sovereign struck at the Royal Mint in London during the reign of Queen Victoria. The absence of a mintmark identifies the coin as a London issue. It features Victoria's celebrated Young Head portrait, one of the most recognizable designs of 19th-century British coinage. Obverse: The young, uncrowned portrait of Queen Victoria facing left, her hair tied with a ribbon. The surrounding inscription reads VICTORIA D:G: BRITANNIAR: REG: F:D: (Victoria, by the Grace of God, Queen of the Britons, Defender of the Faith). The portrait was designed by William Wyon. Reverse: Saint George on horseback, raising his sword above the defeated dragon. The date 1873 appears below, accompanied by the initials B.P. of designer and engraver Benedetto Pistrucci.
