A gold 1 Sovereign struck in 1880 at the Royal Mint in London during the reign of Queen Victoria. The absence of a mintmark below the portrait identifies it as a London issue. The coin features Victoria’s Young Head portrait and the celebrated Saint George and the Dragon reverse. Obverse: The young, uncrowned portrait of Queen Victoria facing left, her hair tied with a ribbon. The initials W.W. of designer William Wyon appear on the truncation. The surrounding inscription reads VICTORIA D:G: BRITANNIAR: REG: F:D: (Victoria, by the Grace of God, Queen of the Britons, Defender of the Faith). Reverse: Saint George on horseback, raising his sword above the defeated dragon, designed by Benedetto Pistrucci. The date 1880 appears below, accompanied by the designer’s initials B.P.
