A gold 1 Sovereign struck in 1892 at the Melbourne Mint, which operated as an Australian branch of the British Royal Mint. The M mintmark appears on the reverse, on the ground beneath the horse, identifying the place of issue. A total of 3,488,750 Sovereigns of this date were struck at Melbourne. Obverse: The Jubilee Head portrait of Queen Victoria facing left. The Queen wears a small crown, a long veil and the insignia of royal orders. The initials J.E.B. of designer Joseph Edgar Boehm appear at the base of the bust. The surrounding inscription reads VICTORIA D:G: BRITT: REG: F:D: (Victoria, by the Grace of God, Queen of the Britons, Defender of the Faith). Reverse: Saint George on horseback, raising his sword above the defeated dragon, designed by Benedetto Pistrucci. The M mintmark appears on the ground beneath the horse. The date 1892 appears below, accompanied by the designer’s initials B.P.
