The P mintmark appears on the reverse, on the ground line above the date. A total of 4,524,241 Sovereigns were struck at Perth in 1909. Obverse: The uncrowned portrait of King Edward VII faces right. The initials De S of designer George William de Saulles appear below the neck. The surrounding inscription reads EDWARDVS VII D:G: BRITT: OMN: REX F:D: IND: IMP: (Edward VII, by the Grace of God, King of all the Britons, Defender of the Faith and Emperor of India). Reverse: Saint George on horseback raises his sword above the defeated dragon, in the celebrated design by Benedetto Pistrucci.
