The collection is devoted to Martin Luther, one of the central figures of the Protestant Reformation, and depicts important events, individuals and symbols associated with his life and historical legacy. Each coin has a denomination of 3,000 CFA Francs and is struck in .999 fine gold, weighing 1/200 oz - approximately 0.1555g of pure gold - with a diameter of 40 mm. The complete collection contains 1/20 oz of pure gold, approximately 1.555g. The ten designs included in the collection are: Birthplace in Eisleben: A depiction of Martin Luther’s birthplace in Eisleben, inscribed GEBURTSHAUS IN EISLEBEN (“Birthplace in Eisleben”). Ordination in Erfurt: A scene representing Luther’s ordination to the priesthood, inscribed PRIESTERWEIHE IN ERFURT (“Ordination in Erfurt”). Luther in Rome: A portrait of Luther associated with his visit to Rome, inscribed LUTHER IN ROM. Nailing of the Ninety-Five Theses in Wittenberg: A depiction of the document and church door associated with the publication of the Ninety-Five Theses, inscribed THESENANSCHLAG IN WITTENBERG. Diet of Worms: A scene depicting Luther’s appearance before the imperial assembly at Worms, inscribed WORMSER REICHSTAG. Translation of the New Testament: A design commemorating Luther’s translation of the New Testament into German, inscribed ÜBERSETZUNG DES NEUEN TESTAMENTS. Marriage to Katharina von Bora: A portrait of Katharina von Bora, Luther’s wife, inscribed HEIRAT MIT KATHARINA VON BORA. Death in Eisleben: A design relating to Luther’s final days and death in Eisleben, inscribed TOD IN EISLEBEN. Portrait of Martin Luther: A frontal portrait of Martin Luther against a background of inscriptions, inscribed PORTRAIT MARTIN LUTHER. Luther Rose: Martin Luther’s personal and theological emblem, incorporating a rose and cross, inscribed LUTHERROSE. Obverse: The coat of arms of the Republic of Chad and the denomination 3,000 CFA Francs. Reverse: One of ten designs depicting an event, person or symbol associated with the life and legacy of Martin Luther. The designs bear the inscription MARTIN LUTHER - LIFE OF A REBEL. According to the photographed certificates, several designs were issued in limited quantities of 7,500 pieces each, while the Luther Rose coin had a stated limitation of 30,000 pieces. The coins are housed in capsules and rigid display holders, presented in their original two-level case with individual certificates of authenticity. The case, capsules and certificates show minor signs of storage and handling.
