Israel - ”Tel Aviv Jubilee” Medal 1959 - Silver 935, 60g (approx. 56.1g pure silver, 1.8 oz), 35 mm - Official state medal, issued in 1959. The origins of Tel Aviv lie in the first Jewish neighborhoods established outside Jaffa. The first house in Neve Tzedek was built in 1887, followed by additional Jewish neighborhoods beyond the old city. In 1909, the Ahuzat Bayit society, with assistance from the Jewish National Fund, purchased large sand dunes northeast of Jaffa and founded what would become the first modern Hebrew city. The settlement was later renamed “Tel Aviv, ” inspired by Nahum Sokolow’s Hebrew translation of Theodor Herzl’s novel “Altneuland.” Within fifty years, the small settlement among the dunes developed into a major cultural and economic center in the Land of Israel. Obverse: Sand dunes and sea waves symbolizing the early days of Tel Aviv. A Star of David appears on the right, while the biblical verse “Though thy beginning was small, yet thy latter end should greatly increase” (Job 8:7) appears at center, with the English translation around the rim. Reverse: Stylized depiction of a flourishing modern city beside an olive branch, with the inscription “Tel Aviv 1909-1959.” The English inscription “Tel Aviv 1909-1959” appears along the rim.
