The 2023 issue features a special transition obverse commemorating Queen Elizabeth II, who died in 2022 after a reign of 70 years. The obverse bears the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt, and the inscriptions: ELIZABETH II 5 DOLLARS 2023 The dates 1952 and 2022 appear to the left of the portrait, representing the years of the Queen’s reign. Four pearls between the dates symbolize the four effigies of Queen Elizabeth II that appeared on Canadian coinage during her reign.
