The series comprises 50 ingots, each depicting a monarch or a significant event in the history of the British monarchy. The ingot commemorates William I, known as William the Conqueror, King of England from 1066 to 1087, and the compilation of the Domesday Book. Commissioned by the king at Christmas 1085 and undertaken during 1086, the survey recorded land ownership, land use and property values for taxation and royal administration. The National Archives Obverse: A crowned portrait of William the Conqueror appears within an oval frame. Beside it is a local inquiry conducted before the king’s representatives as part of the collection of information for the Domesday Book.
