The series comprises 50 ingots, each depicting a monarch or a significant event in the history of the British monarchy. The ingot commemorates John, King of England from 1199 to 1216, and the granting of Magna Carta at Runnymede in 1215. Following a prolonged conflict with a group of rebellious barons, the king agreed to a charter that limited certain aspects of royal authority and recognised defined rights and legal procedures. Authenticated with the royal seal, Magna Carta became an enduring symbol of the rule of law and limitations upon governmental power. Beside it is a depiction of the assembly at Runnymede, with the king seated upon his throne and presenting the charter to a clergyman in the presence of barons, knights and other representatives.
