The series comprises 50 ingots, each depicting a monarch or a significant event in the history of the British monarchy. The ingot commemorates Henry IV, King of England from 1399 to 1413, and the persecution of the Lollards during his reign. The Lollards were a religious movement inspired by the teachings of the theologian John Wycliffe and called, among other things, for wider access to scripture and reform of the Church. Measures against the movement intensified during Henry IV’s reign, and its adherents were arrested, interrogated and punished for heresy. Obverse: A crowned portrait of King Henry IV appears within an oval frame. Beside it are imprisoned Lollards confined within a cell. One stands in prayer while another sits with his face covered by his hands, as a jailer enters through the door carrying vessels for food and drink.
