The series comprises 50 ingots, each depicting a monarch or a significant event in the history of the British monarchy. The ingot commemorates Richard II, King of England from 1377 to 1399, and his confrontation with the leaders of the Peasants’ Revolt at Smithfield in 1381. The uprising was driven by heavy taxation, social tensions and restrictions imposed upon the working population. The young king met the rebels at Smithfield, where a confrontation developed during which the rebel leader Wat Tyler was mortally wounded. Richard then addressed the crowd and succeeded in preventing an immediate escalation. Obverse: A crowned portrait of King Richard II appears within an oval frame. Beside it, the king is shown on horseback addressing a group of rebels armed with clubs, swords and other weapons. Courtiers, soldiers and additional mounted figures appear around him.
