John Broadwood and Sons Sheraton Revival Marquetry Overstrung Upright Piano - A late Victorian Sheraton Revival overstrung upright piano by the makers John Broadwood and Sons, London. The mahogany case is decorated with extensive marquetry and boxwood string-inlay. The upper front is divided into three panels, each featuring intricate marquetry depicting classical urns, swags, and foliate scrolls in lighter woods including boxwood and satinwood. The case is further embellished with crossbanded borders and dental moulding under the top lid, standing on square tapering legs with matching inlay terminating in block feet. The piano features a full cast-iron frame cast with the makers name, royal appointments, and historical honors. The internal mechanism is an overstrung, underdamped action. The keyboard comprises white natural keys and black sharps. A brass nameplate above the keyboard is inscribed JOHN BROADWOOD and SONS LONDON. The iron frame is cast with the text: JOHN BROADWOOD and SONS LONDON ESTD 1732 APPOINTMENTS TO H.M. THE QUEEN THE PRINCE and PRINCESS OF WALES THE DUKE OF CONNAUGHT GOLD MEDALS LONDON and PARIS. The serial number 91493 is stamped on the upper right side of the iron frame, dating the instrument to circa 1898-1900. The frame is also cast with REGD FRAME NO 24653.
