A gold ring with a small blue topaz
14K white gold
3.20 gr.
Pure topaz is transparent but impurities add color to it, the most common being yellow. When heated in yellow topaz it gets a reddish-pink hue. If irradiated in addition it gets a bluish tint. Nowadays, it is customary to add a thin layer of titanium oxide to the topaz, thereby obtaining gemstones that glow in different colors.
The name Topaz comes from the Greek "Topzos" and means "to search" which is the name of an island in the Red Sea that was difficult to find, from which a yellow gemstone was mined (today it seems to be yellow olivine). In the Middle Ages, Topaz was a nickname for every yellow gemstone, but today the name is unique only to the silicate described.
