Sefer Kavanos HaAgados – Kaftor V’Ferach, Basel 1581. First Edition. Personal Copy of R. Moshe Aryeh Freund - Sefer Kavanos HaAgados – Kaftor V’Ferach, rare first edition printed in Basel, 1581. A fascinating work authored by R. Yaakov Luzzato of Tzfas, which aims to clarify difficult Agadic passages of the Gemara and Zohar.  The author was a disciple of the Ramak – R. Moshe Cordorvero, and quotes from his teacher in this very work. See, for example on pp. 86: “And I heard from my master, the wise R. Moshe Cordevero the meaning of this…” Personal Copy of R. Moshe Aryeh Freund with his personal stamps, and various handwritten inscriptions from his youth in Siget. Also seen are various ownership inscriptions in Hungarian: “Freund Mozes Sziget”.  R. Moshe Aryeh Freund (1903–1996), Av Beis Din of the Eidah HaChareidis in Jerusalem from 1979 until his death. He was born in Bonyhad, Hungary, to R. Yisroel Freund, the local Av Beis Din, and grandson of the Admor of Nasod, R. Yehoshua Freund. Prior to the outbreak of WWII, he served as Rosh Yeshiva and Av Beis Bin in Satmar, Romania. He was the sole survivor of his family, as his wife and nine children were murdered by the Nazis. Rebuilding his life after the war, he immigrated to Eretz Yisroel in 1951, leading the Satmar community in Jerusalem and authoring the seminal halachic work Ateres Yehoshua, by which he was affectionately known. Renowned for his piety, zealotry, and unyielding commitment to traditional Judaism, he influenced generations of students and was succeeded by R. Yisroel Moshe Dushinsky and R. Yaakov Fisher upon his passing at age 92. In moderate-poor condition, with many stains and signs of wear throughout. Worming and traces of mildew seen on some pages. Final leaf detached, with minor tears. Lacking two leaves: pp. 41 and 44.  162 pp. (mispaginated).
