The instrument is constructed with a cast iron base finished in black japanning. The upper assembly consists of a polished metal cylindrical housing with knurled adjustment sections and a revolving protective cover for the sealed glass spirit vial. The maker's mark is embossed on a raised metal band reading J. RABONE & SONS and MADE IN ENGLAND. This instrument was designed for the high-accuracy levelling of machinery and engineering components.
