Max Wiese, Theodor Fontane Commemorative Cast Metal Relief Plaque, 1907 - This cast metal relief plaque was designed by the sculptor Max Wiese (1846–1925) to commemorate the unveiling of his life-size monument to the German novelist and poet Theodor Fontane in Neuruppin in 1907. The relief depicts Fontane seated in profile, looking towards the skyline of his birthplace, Neuruppin, which features prominent church spires and industrial chimneys. Beside him on the bench lie his hat and walking stick. The lower panel of the plaque contains a three-line incised inscription in German script: Denkmal Theodor Fontane's des / Dichters der Mark zu Neu-Ruppin. / anno 1907. (Monument of Theodor Fontane, Poet of the March, in Neuruppin. Anno 1907). The plaque is signed M. Wiese on the lower right of the main field. It is constructed from a dark patinated metal, typically associated with German artistic iron casting or bronze, and features an arched top with an integral hanging loop.
