Bidspirit auction | A Brass Nautical Style Pocket

A Brass Nautical Style Pocket Compass and Sundial - This portable nautical-style instrument is a reproduction of a historical maritime design, combining a magnetic compass and a sundial. It is constructed from brass with an antiqued surface finish. The circular brass case is fitted with a protective glass cover over a printed card compass dial. The dial features a 32-point compass rose using archaic typography where East is inscribed as Eaft and West as Weft, with North indicated by a fleur-de-lis. The outer bowl of the compass is graduated in quadrants from 0 to 90 degrees. A removable brass chapter ring sits atop the glass, engraved with Roman numeral hour markers from III to VIII and featuring a central bar with a hinged, shaped gnomon. The interior of the screw-off lid is fitted with a printed compass rose that mirrors the main dial. No maker marks or signatures are present on the case or dials. Diameter: approximately 8.2 cm.
