Thomas Allom (1804-1872), A Pair of Hand-Coloured Steel Engravings of Northern England - A pair of mid-19th century hand-coloured steel engravings after Thomas Allom (British, 1804-1872), originally published in topographical volumes such as Westmorland, Cumberland, Durham, and Northumberland Illustrated (circa 1832-1835). The first print, titled Borrowdale, Cumberland, is engraved by R. Sands and depicts a dramatic mountain river landscape with a figure and dogs in the foreground. The second print, titled Royal Arcade, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, is engraved by J. Tingle and illustrates a bustling urban scene featuring neoclassical architecture, figures in Victorian dress, and horse-drawn transport. Both prints feature hand-painted watercolour washes and show distinct plate marks. The works are housed in black-painted wooden frames with gilt-finished beaded inner borders.
