The volumes are uniformly bound in quarter-leather with dark-toned leather spines over purple textured cloth boards. Each spine is decorated with gilt-stamped horizontal bands and decorative floral motifs. The visible individual titles and volume numbers on the spines include Barnaby Rudge (Vol. I), Oliver Twist (Vol. III), Sketches by Boz (Vol. V), Old Curiosity Shop (Vol. IV), Bleak House (Vol. XI), Little Dorrit (Vol. XII), American Notes Etc. (Vol. XIV), and Edwin Drood Etc. (Vol. XXI). The volumes are in an octavo format. One volume, Sketches by Boz, features a different textured cloth on the boards compared to the others in the set, suggesting a possible contemporary repair or a mixed set.
