Elizabeth Collet Silk and Linen Sampler, Cirencester 1788 - An 18th-century silk and linen needlework sampler executed in coloured silks on a linen ground. The composition is arranged in several registers containing two alphabets and numeric sequences above three moral and religious verses. The decorative scheme features a central Tree of Life with a coiled serpent, flanked by small figures of Adam and Eve and further surrounded by stylised trees, floral baskets, and long-tailed peacocks. The lower section includes figures of a man in a top hat and a woman with a child. The piece is housed in a dark-stained wood frame. The work is inscribed with several verses including she whole good deeds doth here Make God her friend . shall know no want when Time is at an end and The second Adam shall Restore the ruins of the first . Hosanna to that sovereign Power that new creates our dust. A central cartouche is inscribed Elizabeth * collet Workd this sampler in the Year 1788 in the 8th Year of her Age at M Hills Cirencester.
