Bidspirit auction | 1889 Fort Bennet Dakota Territory

1889 Fort Bennet Dakota Territory Post Office Hand Cancel Stamper - A rare piece of history from the Western frontier military outpost Fort Bennet (now spelled Fort Bennett) in Dakota Territory.  A circular date stamp marker with wood handle, 5” long, reading Jun 1 1889, with some damage on the ”8”s.  Possibly deaccessioned from a museum, with orange letters/numbers as seen in photo. Fort Bennett closed permanently in November 1891, and its site is now completely underwater beneath the Oahe Reservoir.  This is a prize piece for military and postal historians.
