ROBERT JULIUS BRAWLEY, ”WEMAN #3” - ”Weman #3”, a signed print by listed artist, Robert Julius Brawley. Hand-signed in pencil lower right and titled lower left. Known for his symbolically rich still life and figure works, he began his career as an Abstract Expressionist but study in Florence, Italy influenced his move away from abstraction. Born April 24, 1937, the son of Julius Augustus and Evanelle M. Rogers Brawley, he studied at the San Francisco Art Institute, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1963, and a Master of Fine Arts in 1965. An Abstract Expressionist painter as a student, he later turned to various froms of representation in his art, primarily influenced by his experiences during a postgraduate stay through a Fulbright Grant in Florence, Italy. In 1988 Brawley joined the faculty of Kansas University, serving as Chairman of the Art Department for five years. He loved teaching, and gently directed his students toward finding an understanding of their own sensibilities in connection with the knowledge of the workings of the universe.
