ALVAR AALTO, IITTALA COLLECTION ”SAVOY VASE” - This lot features a Iittala Alvar Aalto Collection vase in ultramarine blue mouth-blown glass. It is also known as the Savoy Vase. The vase was designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto and his wife Aino for a design competition in 1936. It became an iconic piece of Finnish design after being displayed at the 1937 Paris World's Fair. The unique, wavy shape was reportedly inspired by the hem of a Sami woman's dress, with original sketches titled ”The Eskimo Woman's Leather Breeches”. Each vase is still manufactured by skilled glassblowers at the Iittala factory in Finland using original wooden molds. This vase is accompanied with Aalto's MOMA book.
