General Mark Wayne Clark (1896–1984) commanded the U.S. Fifteenth Army Group in Italy in World War II, served as U.S. High Commissioner for Austria 1945–1947 (the ”Danube” of the title), and was Commander-in-Chief of UN forces in Korea 1952–1953, the general who signed the Korean armistice (the ”Yalu”). In this 1954 memoir he gives a firsthand account of seven years on the battlefield and at the conference table during the Cold War and the Korean War: the post-war occupation of Austria, dealings with the Soviets, his year of duty in Korea as Commander-in-Chief of United Nations forces, the ceasefire negotiations, and the Little and Big Switch POW exchanges. Clark speaks candidly about his running battle with the Communists from 1945 on, arguing the Korean conflict was a war America might have won. Companion volume to his earlier Calculated Risk (1950). This copy is inscribed and signed by the author on the front endpaper in blue ink: ”To: Marvin E. Boutell, With the warm regards & best wishes of the author, Mark W. Clark.” First Edition.
