Each framed in a silver-plated, shellac-polished, coved moulding, the sight-edge with acanthus ornament. ”Battle of Kahlenberg with Polish Hussars and Turks” on the stretcher frame, old inscription ”Carl Breydel […] Antwerp. a very good battle painter”, also a pressed, red wax seal and the old inventory number in oil ”No. 123” on the canvas. ”Battle between Prussian and Swedish troops in the Great Northern War” on the stretcher frame, old inscription ”Carl Breidel, called Cavalier Breidel – born 1677 in Antwerp †. 1744 (sic!).”, also a pressed, red wax seal and an old inventory number in oil ”No. 122” on the canvas. With a conservation report from 30.08.2013. Canvas re-tacked long ago. Both works with age-related craquelure and slight climate edge. Numerous, professional pinpoint retouches in the ”Turkish Battle” as well as somewhat larger ones in the sky upper middle. Few professional retouches in the ”European Battle”. In both cases, edges rubbed and with pinpoint paint losses. Frame each heavily rubbed and with traces of oxidation, mitre joints slightly open. Dimensions: 31 x 39 cm / 31 x 38.5 cm, Frame 37 x 46 cm. Karel Breydel 1678 Antwerp – 1733 ibid. From 1691, a student of Peter Yckens, later Pieter Rysbraeck. Afterwards, several stations in Germany (Nuremberg, Frankfurt am Main, Kassel). 1703 return to Amsterdam. 1704 member of the Guild of St. Luke, 1723 moved to Brussels, 1726 to Ghent.
