Signed, locality indicated and dated ”Windmaier München 1872” faintly legible lower right. Verso with the stamp ”Malerleinwand – [F]arben-Farbrik von Richard Wurm – München.”. In an opulent Neo-Baroque stucco frame with meander sightline, strong profiling with laurel and encompassing egg-and-dart. Frame verso with remnants of a sticker from the Königsberg art dealership Hübner and Matz and ”72”. The (mirror-inverted) original of the present painting was one of the three versions of Adolph Heinrich Lier's ”Returning Villagers near Pang”, in a comparable format. The first version is undated, the second dated 1868, the third was created in the same year as the present painting. Cf. WVZ Mennacher 299f and 405.
