Monogrammed and dated ”R B 11” lower right. Verso inscribed, titled, signed again and numbered in pencil ”No. 195”. Framed by the artist's hand in a Berlin strip frame, this verso inscribed ”R. Birnstengel – Dresden – Beim Räuchern – Nr. 90” (While Smoking – No. 90) and with a label with numbering. Pinholes due to technique at top and bottom. Structure of the painting board showing through. Punctual paint losses. Rebate area rubbed. Frame heavily rubbed and overpainted. Dimensions: 24.9 x 34.9 cm, Frame: 32.5 x 42.5 cm. Richard Birnstengel 1881 Dresden – 1968 ibid. German painter, draftsman and graphic artist who studied at the Dresden Art Academy with Oskar Zwintscher and Gotthardt Kuehl. From 1912, worked on the Hoher Arber (Bavarian Forest). 1919 married Dorothea Arndt. The time of his stays on the Curonian Spit is considered his most fruitful creative phase, where he found his characteristic post-impressionist style. Almost his entire life's work was lost due to bombing raids in 1945.
