Oil on canvas, laminated onto cardboard before the painting process. Signed ”R. Birnstengel” lower right. Verso by an unknown hand (?) titled and dated in pencil ”Kurische Nehrung 1936” as well as with a later paper label with information on the work and artist. In a bole-visible, gold-colored Neo-Renaissance frame. Paint layer soiled in the left margin. Frame slightly rubbed and scuffed, with drying cracks, probably overpainted and with open mitre joint. Dimensions: 21 x 26.5 cm, Frame: 27.5 x 33 cm. Richard Birnstengel 1881 Dresden – 1968 ibid. German painter, draftsman and graphic artist who studied at the Dresden Art Academy with Oskar Zwintscher and Gotthardt Kuehl. From 1912, worked on the Hoher Arber (Bavarian Forest). 1919 married Dorothea Arndt. The time of his stays on the Curonian Spit is considered his most fruitful creative phase, where he found his characteristic post-impressionist style. Almost his entire life's work was lost due to bombing raids in 1945.
