Karl Hofer - Karl Hofer (in the style of), Female Nude Facing Left. Probably 2nd Quarter 20th Century.. Karl Hofer 1878 Karlsruhe – 1955 Berlin Oil on canvas. Unsigned. Indistinctly inscribed on the upper stretcher bar on the reverse. Paint layer in the rebate area with slight pressure marks and paint loss, especially in the upper and right areas. Paint layer also partly with craquelure in the area of the body. Mitre joints of the stretcher slightly open. Dimensions: 92.4 x 69 cm. Karl Hofer 1878 Karlsruhe – 1955 Berlin After commercial training, 1897–1903 studied at the Grand Ducal Baden Academy of Arts in Karlsruhe with H. Thoma and L. von Kalckreuth. Lived in Rome from 1903–08. 1908 member of the Berlin Secession. Lived in Paris from 1908–13, spent a few months in India. 1913 moved to Berlin. 1914–17 civilian internment in France. 1920 appointed to the Berlin–Charlottenburg School of Art, professorship from 1921–34. 1927 co-founder of the Baden Secession. In 1937, 311 works were confiscated from German museums as ”degenerate”. 1945 appointed director of the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Berlin–Charlottenburg. 1953 autobiography ”Memoirs of a Painter”.
