On the reverse with the artist's estate stamp, inventory no. ”3” and on the stretcher with inscriptions by another hand. Framed in a white molding. Several professionally executed retouches on the image surface, especially in the white collar as well as small ones in the background and on the face. Stretcher renewed. Frame slightly rubbed, mitre joints slightly open. Dimensions: 65.5 x 55.5 cm, Frame 76 x 66 cm. Carl Lohse 1895 Hamburg – 1965 Dresden 1909/10 attended the State School of Applied Arts Hamburg, supported by the director of the Hamburg Kunsthalle Alfred Lichtwark. From 1912 studied at the Weimar Academy as a scholarship holder of the Kunsthalle Hamburg, left the academy prematurely together with Otto Pankok. Traveled to Holland to see the works of Vincent van Gogh. 1914–16 participated in the war, surviving as the only one of his company. 1920 participated in an exhibition as a guest of the ”Dresdner Sezession 1919” in the Galerie Arnold in Dresden. 1921 solo exhibition in the Kunstsalon Emil Richter in Dresden. None of his works were sold. Moved to Hamburg, odd jobs. 1929 again moved to Bischofswerda. 1931 art exhibition Heinrich Kühl in Dresden. Painting ban from the mid-1930s after Gestapo searches. 1946 exhibition at the Allgemeine Deutsche Kunstausstellung Dresden. 1990 opening of the ”Galerie Carl Lohse” in Bischofswerda. 2017/18 the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden showed a comprehensive retrospective of the artist's work in the Albertinum.
